Andrea Borel

Executive Director, HSI/Latin America

Andrea Borel is Executive Director for HSI/Latin America, headquartered in San José, Costa Rica. She has over 15 years of experience working in management of environmental and conservation initiatives in Central America.

Prior to joining HSI, Andrea was the Conservation Director for The Nature Conservancy in Costa Rica. She also spent several years involved working for a private equity renewable energy fund (CAREC) financed by the IADB, CABEI and other European banks. Early in her career, she served eight years as the Senior Environmental Specialist at the Regional Environmental Office for the US State Department, based in Costa Rica, advising on a wide range of transboundary environmental and technological issues in 22 countries in the Central America and the Caribbean. Ms. Borel also collaborated with the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS), helping to develop a training program for US and Latin American decision makers on environmental issues. She holds a BSc in Biology from the University of Costa Rica, and a Master in Arts in Geography with an emphasis in environmental policy from the University of Western Ontario, Canada.

Ms. Borel is responsible for the development and implementation of wide range of programs focused on animal welfare in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. These programs include efforts to curb animal cruelty cases (dog fighting, puppy mills, hoarding and other), implementation of new legislation, building capacity of local partners, and initiatives to stop wildlife trafficking in the region.
