Nuggehalli Jayasimha is the Director of Humane Society International / India based in the city of Hyderabad, located in the southern half of India. Jayasimha manages HSI’s programs in India related to farm animal welfare, wildlife, and animals used in research, as well as several country-wide campaigns.
Jayasimha is a Member-at-Large of the Animal Welfare Board of India, which is part of India’s Ministry of Environment and Forests, and is a member of the editorial, legal and farm animal welfare subcommittee of the Board. Previously, he served as a member of a Drafting Committee of the AWBI to suggest amendments to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960.
Jayasimha has served as a member of several Committees for different government ministries in India, including the Bureau of Indian Standards and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. His roles have entailed drafting new codes and reviewing the existing codes to incorporate animal welfare measures for food and agricultural standards; ensuring animals were treated humanely on sets and depicted in the correct manner; and successfully drafting standards for animal transport, zoos and aquaria, and circuses.
He has served as a Member of the Committee set up by the Honourable High Court of Bombay to control illegal trade in wildlife, and was also appointed by the Court to be a Hon. Animal Welfare Officer for the Committee to Monitor Animal Welfare Laws in Maharashtra (a state in India).
Jayasimha was a Nominee for the Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experimentation of Animals, Ministry of Environment and Forest, where he was proactive on the internal animal ethics committee to refine, reduce, and replace the use of animals in experimentation for establishments that breed and conduct experimentation on animals.
He also served on the Expert Group of National Institute of Animal Welfare to set the syllabus and design a course module for graduate and post-graduate students to prepare them for employment in the field of animal welfare.
Jayasimha received a law degree from Bangalore University and is enrolled as an advocate in the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa.
