One hundred cats rescued from different neglect situations will leave a Humane Society International/Canada emergency shelter before the holidays following 12 months of care. HSI/Canada has been assisting with the care of these animals seized by the Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation du Québec.

HSI sent a letter to Chief Minister of Maharashtra and Collector of Thane urging the government to end cockfighting in that state. The request was in response to an illegal cockfighting event scheduled to be held in Ulhasnagar, Maharashtra on Jan. 2, 2015.

The European Commission implemented a conditional ban of the import of horsemeat from Mexico following a series of audits by the Food and Veterinary Office. The audits consistently identified serious problems with the lack of traceability of horses slaughtered for EU export with origins in the United States and Mexico, particularly regarding veterinary medical treatment records.

India Confiscates Hundreds of Animals at Nepal Border as Illegal Transport Ban Takes Effect Ahead of Gadhimai Festival
HSI undertook a special mission to Nepal in collaboration with People for Animals and Animal Welfare Network Nepal where they met the President and the Prime Minister of Nepal, as well as Temple officials to call for a suspension of the sacrifice of half a million buffalo, goats and hens at this year's Gadhimai festival.

The Ministry of Home Affairs ordered all field formations of Sashastra Seema Bal to prevent cattle transport without license. The order comes a few weeks before the Gadhimai festival where more than 500,000 animals, most originating from India, could be sacrificed in Nepal.

Supreme Court of India Intervenes to Save Thousands of Animals from Nepal’s Brutal Gadhimai Festival Sacrifice
The Supreme Court of India passed an interim order directing the Union of India to prevent the illegal movement of animals across the border from India to Nepal, to be sacrificed at the Gadhimai Festival.

President of World Council of Arya Samaj, Swami Agnivesh, urged Hindu devotees to stop the barbaric practice of sacrificing hundreds of thousands of animals on the occasion of the Gadhimai Festival in Nepal. Agnivesh joins Humane Society International and Animal Welfare Network Nepal in calling for an end to the slaughter.

Members of the European Parliament’s Environment Committee voted to halt EU funding funneled to those who breed bulls for bullfights. Humane Society International welcomed the vote and, in advance of a full plenary vote, called on all MEPs to speak out against the bloodsport.
