Figures released by DEFRA in December 2016 revealed that 10,886 badgers were killed that year in 10 zones across Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Somerset as part of the government’s badger cull policy, bringing the total number of badgers killed since the culls started in 2013 to 14,829.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced that all leopards may qualify for “endangered” status under the Endangered Species Act. The decision comes in response to a legal petition submitted in July 2016 by The HSUS, HSI, IFAW, the Center for Biological Diversity and The Fund for Animals.

As part of its 2017 election platform, the New Democratic Party of British Columbia has pledged to ban all trophy hunting of grizzly bears in the province. HSI/Canada is praising the new policy, and calling on all major parties in the province to include similar policies in their platforms.
