HSI/Canada Applauds the City of Calgary for Approving Shark Fin Ban in Principle
HSI/Canada applauds the decision by the Calgary City Council to pass a bylaw to ban the possession, trade, sale and distribution of shark fin products through first reading, thereby approving it in principle. Once the bylaw passes in January, Calgary will become the first municipality in Alberta, and the 15th in Canada, to ban shark fin products.

HSI/Canada welcomes the publication of a landmark veterinary report that concludes trade prohibitions on products of commercial seal hunts are justified on animal welfare grounds because of the inherent obstacles to humane slaughter in commercial sealing.

HSI Urges MEPs to Defend European Union Trade Ban on Commercial Seal Hunt Products
The European Parliament’s Committee on Petitions debated a 20,000+ signature petition submitted by Humane Society International, urging MEPs to defend the EU’s trade ban on products from commercial seal hunts, in place since 2010. Canada, which has an annual commercial seal slaughter that has resulted in the deaths of more than two million seals in the past decade alone, is challenging the EU ban at the World Trade Organisation.
