Imagine a syringe being forced down your throat and a massive chemical dose pumped into your stomach, or being squeezed into restraints and forced to breathe toxic vapors for hours. This is how more than a million animals suffer annually, dying in agony in the oldest and most inhumane toxicity test ever devised.
Despite remarkable scientific advancements, some companies and government authorities still rely on tests conceived in the 1920s to judge the safety of everything from vaccines to Botox to shellfish. Despite their inherent cruelty and dubious credibility, these lethal dose tests remain the most commonly conducted animal study in the world today. Often a single chemical will be tested three times over—swallowed, inhaled and slathered onto animals' skin. HSI is campaigning worldwide to remove requirements for lethal dose testing and to achieve acceptance and use of modern, animal-free approaches.
