This year, in honor of Earth Day, people all over the U.S. showed their support for whales by shopping at Buffalo Exchange clothing stores on April 25th. All proceeds from Buffalo Exchange’s Dollar Day Sale, a total of more than $25,000, went towards Humane Society International’s Save Whales-Not Whaling campaign. Hundreds of petitions for a global whale sanctuary were also collected from Buffalo Exchange customers and employees. Taking action against whaling was never easier, or more fun!
Buffalo Exchange is a resale clothing store where recycling and protecting the planet are always in fashion. And this year, saving whales was also on the company’s agenda as they helped HSI raise money to battle the cruel and outmoded practice of whaling.
Humans no longer need the meat or other products from whales and there is no humane method of killing whales. On top of that, there are increasing human health concerns from consuming whale (as well as dolphin and porpoise) products. These points just go to show that whaling is an outdated practice that must come to an end.
HSI’s Save Whales-Not Whaling campaign mobilizes the public and governments around the world to protect whales by educating people about the threat that commercial whaling poses to whale species, the use of trade sanctions to force nations to cease their commercial and so-called scientific whaling activities, and the necessity of creating whale sanctuaries that provide safe havens for whales to breed, feed, and give birth away from human predators.
Though the Earth Day events at Buffalo Exchange stores are now over, you can still help whales by signing the signing the petition to call for a global whale sanctuary. After all, whaling is so last century!
