Earth to Obama: Don't Sell Out the Whales!
Not on Earth Day. Not on any day.
Join HSI, The Humane Society of the United States and partner organizations along with actress Kristin Bauer of HBO's True Blood on the National Mall in Washington, DC on Thursday, April 22 in honor of Earth Day and rally to protect whales!
During the past year, selected members of the International Whaling Commission have been meeting to discuss the future of the IWC. Out of these closed-door meetings has come a package deal that, if approved, would suspend the 1986 commercial whaling moratorium for 10 years and would assign kill quotas to whaling nations, allowing them to hunt whales for commercial purposes, even in a sanctuary.
This proposal undermines the conservation mandate of the IWC, and it would be a grave mistake for the United States to support it. The U.S. must remain a leader in whale protection and oppose this potentially catastrophic sellout. The commercial whaling moratorium is the single most effective conservation achievement in place to protect whales—it should not now be thrown aside to appease three rogue whaling nations.
Join Humane Society International, The Humane Society of the United States, International Fund for Animal Welfare, Greenpeace, Animal Welfare Institute, Natural Resources Defense Council, and the Earth Day Network for a rally on the National Mall to protect whales and demonstrate our unified oppositions to the proposed deal.
Actress Kristin Bauer from HBO's True Blood will join the rally and share her dedication to saving the whales. Humane Society staff and leaders and representatives from our partner organizations will also attend and speak at the event. At 1pm, we will wind up with a parade past the White House to show President Obama that Americans are against a return to commercial whaling.
Date: Thursday, April 22, 2010
Location: National Mall at 12th Street NW, Washington, DC (stage near the National Monument)
Kill the deal, not the whales!
Please call President Obama at 202-456-1414 and urge him to immediately withdraw support for the dirty deal to allow commercial whaling. Tell him the Australian proposal deserves his support, instead. Then, call Vice President Biden at 202-456-9000 and tell him the whales need him to weigh in and urge that the U.S. not lift the ban on commercial whaling. Thank you!
