(Nov. 5, 2010) – Although Haiti did not sustain a direct hit from Hurricane Tomas, the heavy rain and high winds produced by the storm are still potentially devastating for the beleaguered island nation. Humane Society International is on the ground in Haiti, closely monitoring the storm, and preparing to assist with animal welfare needs in its wake, if necessary.

"Humane Society International maintains its position on the ground in Haiti and has spent the past week working with veterinarians around the country to mobilize within their communities to help people and animals in need prepare for the storm,” said Chris Bossong-Broughton, HSI program coordinator in Haiti. “Several of our veterinary partners contacted their local radio stations to alert citizens to move animals out of flash flood zones and areas at risk for mudslides. These efforts come on the heels of an extensive disaster preparedness and planning course held by HSI for local vets earlier this year.”

As part of its comprehensive approach to building long-term animal welfare infrastructure in Haiti, HSI also recently completed a five-day training for 16 Haitian veterinarians in animal health evaluation and spay/neuter surgeries.

Bossong-Broughton is currently stationed at the southern part of the island where the storm is expected to hit hardest and disaster response, if any, will be most needed.
