Humane Society International and Aguascalientes Municipality Sign Agreement to Fight Animal Cruelty
Humane Society International, a leading animal welfare organization, signed an agreement with Aguascalientes Municipality in Mexico to set up an anti-animal abuse program. The agreement includes the hiring of a full-time animal protection consultant, training and the donation of animal handling equipment.
Anton Aguilar, director of HSI/Mexico, said: “This agreement shows the political determination of Aguascalientes Municipality to confront animal cruelty. This is the first of a series of programs we are developing to work with local authorities in Mexico to create a culture of respect and care towards animals. We congratulate Mayor Juan Antonio Martin del Campo for his commitment to improve animal welfare.”
HSI will also work with the Aguascalientes State Environment Attorney and the Department of Public Security to enhance coordination to respond quickly and effectively to animal abuse cases.
Aguascalientes is well-known for the animal suffering that takes place during “Feria de San Marcos”, the largest fair in the country. This year, several extreme cruelty cases, including abandonment and hoarding, were reported throughout the State.
