Humane Society International is praising Barilla, the world's leading pasta maker, for an announcement that its Brazil operations will require egg suppliers to transition to cage-free housing systems for egg laying hens as of 2020.

In its statement, Barilla says: “Barilla considers the close confinement of hens as a practice detrimental to Animal Welfare, and as such, Barilla has decided to progressively phase it out from the supply chain within 2020.”

Fernanda Vieira, corporate policy and program manager for HSI Farm Animals in Brazil, stated: “We congratulate Barilla Brazil for taking animal welfare in its supply chain seriously by pledging to switch to a 100 percent cage-free egg supply chain. Barilla’s cage-free policy is a clear sign that the future of egg production in Brazil is cage free. Barilla’s new policy, once implemented, will spare thousands of egg-laying hens from a lifetime of misery in tiny cages.”
