HSI/Europe Open Letter to the Irish Presidency of the EU Regarding Horizon 2020
Horizon 2020 offers the EU a unique opportunity to lead the world in truly groundbreaking health research—an area of science that has struggled to make progress on important diseases such as cancer, asthma and degenerative neurological disorders. These difficulties are attributable in large part to the limitations of research that uses mice and other animals as “models” for human biology.

HSI/Canada Celebrates Canadian Transportation Agency Decision Confirming Air Canada’s Right to Refuse Shipments of Primates for Research
HSI/Canada Animal Alliance of Canada and Justice for Animals welcomed a ruling by the Canadian Transportation Agency, confirming the right of Air Canada to refuse the live shipment of primates destined for laboratories, where they would be for toxicity testing, research or other harmful laboratory experiments.

Lush Cosmetics Awards Humane Society International Prize for ‘Outstanding’ Work to End Cruel and Outdated Animal Testing for Pesticides
HSI received £40,000 for being selected to win in the lobbying category for leadership of a successful two-year campaign that dramatically reduced animal-testing requirements under Europe’s new regulations for non-food pesticides.

New Cell Test Will Help Save Rabbits From Severe Eye Irritation Experiments
The Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD), an economic alliance of 34 industrialized countries, has adopted a new validated non-animal test method that can be used to asses chemicals for severe eye irritation and corrosion instead of subjecting rabbits to having chemicals dripped in their eyes.

Scientists from Humane Society International, The Humane Society of the United States and other animal welfare groups were pleased that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that it will reduce animal testing requirements for pesticides.
