Grupo Caridad was founded in 2006 with the purpose of improving animal welfare and ending the mistreatment and abandonment of animals in Peru. The partnership between Grupo Caridad and HSI began immediately following the 2007 earthquake that struck the central coast of Peru. Grupo Caridad became one of the primary organizations working with HSI to provide disaster relief, mobilizing resources and providing assistance to hundreds of injured animals in Pisco and Chincha.

Founded by two young and incredibly dedicated citizens, Fernando Moreno and Daniella Granda, Grupo Caridad continues to expand the scope of their work to cities and villages outside of Lima. With the support of HSI, the organization has launched a five year spay/neuter program that covers costs for low-income families. Community volunteers and the assistance of some very dedicated veterinarians contribute greatly to this initiative’s success.

Grupo Caridad has developed successful relationships with the local media, encouraging them to write about the importance of animal care; with Peru’s biggest celebrities to rally support for sterilizing pets; and with private companies to donate in-kind resources.

Founder Fernando Moreno has attended our Animal Care Expo each year since 2008. At the 2010 Expo, he spoke to the international attendees on the importance of spay/neuter campaigns in Latin America. He also accepted our invitation to become an HSI Animal Advocate. Through this partnership, HSI intends to highlight the dedication and perseverance of this group to promote animal welfare in Peru.
