In a historic move to advance both human medical progress and move away from reliance on monkeys, dogs and other animals as models of human disease, the Indian Council of Medical Research, under the aegis of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, has announced its plans to establish a new “ICMR Centre of Excellence in Human Pathway-Based Biomedicine and Risk Assessment” in Hyderabad.

South Korea biocidal products law amendment introduced to promote replacement of animal testing
Global animal welfare leader Humane Society International has once again collaborated with South Korean National Assembly member Jeong Ae Han to reverse the country’s increasing use of animals in laboratories through legislative reform, this time by amending the Korean Chemical Consumer Products and Biocides Safety Act to require the use of recognized cellular, computational and other alternatives to vertebrate animal testing whenever possible (bill no. 2018185).

Shocking case of Labrador ‘Charlie’ burnt alive in Sri Lanka renews calls for Animal Welfare Bill to finally replace 112-year-old cruelty law
Animal protection campaigners in Sri Lanka, Humane Society International, are renewing calls for the country’s outdated 1907 animal welfare law to be replaced, following a series of shocking cases of animal abuse. The most recent case on New Year’s Eve saw a Labrador dog named Charlie burnt alive whilst in his outdoor kennel in Negombo. Charlie sustained devastating burns and died of his injuries on New Year’s Day.
