Another Seal Slaughter, Just Days Away
by Rebecca Aldworth
In just days, the commercial seal slaughter off Newfoundland will begin.
It is unthinkable that yet another kill can happen, given the incredible progress our campaign has achieved. The sealing industry has been very clear that our efforts to close global markets for seal products have succeeded, and there is no one prepared to buy seal fur this year.
But those who claim to represent sealers are trying to turn the sealing industry into a glorified welfare program. They are demanding a government subsidy to pay sealers to kill seals so the skins can be stockpiled in warehouses. It is shameful.
The fact is that those people don’t represent all sealers, and our polling shows broad support in the sealing community for a better solution: a federal buyout of the commercial sealing industry. This plan would involve the federal government ending the seal hunt, providing immediate compensation for sealers, and investing in economic alternatives in their communities.
If the killing goes ahead, we know we will witness horrible cruelty, and it remains to be seen how many seals will die, needlessly, at the hands of this industry.
But we also know that an end is within sight. Your support has brought us ever closer to stopping this outdated slaughter. Please stand with us as we bear witness to the 2012 commercial seal slaughter, and work to ensure it is the last one that happens. Donate and take action to help save seals.
