HSI/Canada is Looking for Volunteers!

HSI/Canada is looking for volunteers to donate their time and professional skills.

If you wish to help out occasionally each month, please consider applying for one of the following roles:

Community Leader (Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia)
Graphic Designer
Translator (English to French)
Media Outreach
Veterinarian
Veterinary Assistant (Technician)
Outreach Liaison (Be Cruelty-Free Campaign)
Administrative Support (Be Cruelty-Free Campaign)
Supporter Services Assistant

What to do if these volunteer positions don’t feel like the right fit: Become an Ally! Help us take action on pressing animal welfare issues and campaigns as they emerge. We’ll be calling on you from time-to-time to help when urgent action is required as issues of interest to you arise. There are no time requirements to join the list, but we would love for you to be a part of our response team and an ally to the animals.

Community Leader

Do you want to help HSI/Canada build an even stronger animal protection movement? Then consider becoming a part of our volunteer leadership program by applying to be a community leader.

Community leaders are at the forefront of HSI/Canada’s efforts to celebrate animals and confront cruelty.

As a community leader, you will serve as an HSI/Canada ambassador within your local area to help advance different animal welfare campaigns and legislative priorities.

Volunteers will assist by:

  • Helping support HSI/Canada’s efforts to pass federal, provincial, and municipal animal welfare legislation by assisting with research, administrative tasks, and political advocacy efforts
  • Building a network of HSI/Canada allies who will take action on behalf of animal protection issues
  • Under the guidance and advice of our Political Officer and Volunteer Manager, developing and implementing a local animal protection initiative in your municipality, province, or federal riding, related to HSI/Canada’s campaign priorities
  • Drafting letters to the editors of local and national newspapers
  • Helping with local tabling events to advance the different animal protection legislative priorities

We are looking for volunteers with:

  • A commitment to the mission of HSI/Canada
  • Strong leadership skills and experience
  • Strong community ties
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a variety of people effectively and without judgment
  • Strong computer literacy, online research and writing skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word and Excel, and a general knowledge of social media
  • Ability to take initiative and adapt to rapidly changing priorities
  • Ability to work on a team and as an independent self-starter
  • Residency in the provinces of Quebec, Ontario or British Columbia

Community leaders commit to an average of one to three hours per week for a minimum of one year; time commitment varies by week. Ongoing participation is preferred. After reviewing your application, a staff member will invite you to complete an online, digital interview. If we mutually determine that the opportunity appears to be a good fit, you will be offered the volunteer position.

Graphic Designer

We’re looking for volunteers with talent in graphic design and/or desktop publishing to help produce creative visuals for our campaigns on an ad-hoc basis.

Volunteers will assist by:

  • Producing promotional materials for events, such as posters, roll-up banners and flyers
  • Designing the layout for reports, brochures, flyers, etc.
  • Creating infographics for specific campaign

We are looking for volunteers with:

  • Experience using design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign
  • Demonstrably good graphic design and/or desktop publishing skills
  • Ability to follow instruction, work within parameters of the organization’s branding guidelines and produce high-quality work at short notice
  • An affinity with animal protection and the objectives of HSI/Canada

We are asking a commitment of just a few hours per month (as and when needed) over a minimum period of six months. Volunteers can work remotely and be based anywhere in Canada. Applicants will be asked to submit their CV, a motivated cover letter and a small portfolio of their work for review.

Translator

We’re looking for volunteers with experience in translation from English to French to translate key materials for animal welfare campaigns on an ad-hoc basis.

Volunteers will assist by:

  • Translating letters to Parliament and other key lobby materials from English into French
  • Translating press releases, social media posts and other external communications
  • Proofreading communications materials (French only)

We are looking for volunteers with:

  • Ability to translate French or English as a native language
  • Ability to translate from English to French at a professional level
  • Ability to produce high-quality translations and meet tight deadlines
  • Capability to work well independently
  • An affinity with animal protection and the objectives of HSI/Canada 

We are asking a commitment of just a few hours per month (as and when needed) over a minimum period of six months. Volunteers can work remotely and be based anywhere in Canada. Applicants will be asked to submit their CV and a motivated cover letter for review. Acceptance will be based on passing a trial exercise.

 Media Outreach

We’re looking for volunteers with experience in communications who will help us reach out to media and draft key material for our various campaigns.

Volunteers will assist by:

  • Helping draft articles, op-eds and pitches for regional media outlets about animal welfare issues
  • Reaching out (via phone and email) to media outlets, asking/encouraging them to publish animal welfare-related stories
  • Developing relationships with journalists who cover our issues
  • Determining if stories have been published by looking online or calling/emailing the media outlet/journalist, then compiling results in a monthly report
  • Connecting and collaborating with social media influencers to share our content

We are looking for volunteers with:

  • An interest in animal welfare and protection
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • An eye for detail
  • Strong communication skills in English; fluency in French is a plus
  • Experience/schooling in journalism, marketing or communications

We are asking for a commitment of just a few hours per week (as and when needed) over a minimum period of three months. Volunteers can work remotely and be based anywhere in Canada. Veterinarian

We’re looking for registered/certified veterinarians who wish to volunteer to assist animals in temporary shelters or in various other animal rescue team deployments.

Volunteers will assist by:

  • Providing technical support during initial and subsequent veterinary examination(s), including animal restraint and record keeping
  • Administering vaccinations and other treatments as prescribed
  • Assessing vitals of sheltered animals and making recommendations to supervisor regarding needed emergent or follow-up examinations
  • Performing spay/neuter surgeries on cats and dogs during mass sterilization clinics

We are looking for volunteers with:

  • Ability to meet the requirements specified in the Essential Capabilities document with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented skills
  • A license to practice as a veterinarian according to provincial regulations

We are asking a commitment of one year and request participation in at least one deployment per year. Volunteers typically work long shifts of approximately 10 hours per day during deployments.

Veterinary Assistant

We’re looking for certified veterinary technician skills to assist animals in temporary shelters or in various other animal rescue team deployments.

Volunteers will assist by:

  • Providing technical support during initial and subsequent veterinary examination(s) including animal restraint and record keeping
  • Providing support to veterinarians on-site

We are looking for volunteers with:

Outreach Liaison (BCF Campaign)

We’re looking for volunteers who will help expand our capacity to promote the #BeCrueltyFree/End Animal Testing campaign in K-12 schools, universities, colleges, and other relevant organizations and institutions across Canada.

Volunteers will assist by:

  • Researching schools, school boards, universities, colleges, and other relevant organizations and associations, and finding the appropriate individuals within those institutions to approach about the #BeCrueltyFree/End Animal Testing campaign.
  • Under staff guidance, reaching out to institutions to ask them to participate in the #BeCrueltyFree Canada campaign as well as the wider End Animal Testing campaign.
  • Under staff guidance, researching articles on cosmetic animal testing, non-animal alternative tests and cruelty-free cosmetics; celebrities who are using cruelty-free products and have an interest in animal welfare; institutions that are cruelty-free, etc., and preparing social media posts
  • Developing and assisting with new materials and strategies to promote the #BeCrueltyFree/End Animal Testing campaign in Canada
  • Assisting with meetings and presentations for officials and coordinators to promote the #BeCrueltyFree Canada campaign and/or other End Animal Testing campaign initiatives

We are looking for volunteers with:

  • Excellent verbal and written skills in English and/or French
  • Interest in animal protection
  • Able to work well independently and use good judgment
  • Proficient in the basic functions of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, Google docs, and online research tools
  • Some university/college education preferred, ideally having studied in the fields of communications, politics, education, environment/sustainability, ethics, and/or animal welfare

We are asking a commitment for a minimum of three months, 3 hours per week.

Administrative Support (BCF Campaign)

We’re looking for volunteers to help increase the Campaign Manager’s capacity to meet his/her goals by providing administrative support.

Volunteers will assist by:

  • Providing general administrative support including filing, data entry, assistance with mailings, updating excel spreadsheets, and photocopying, etc.
  • Helping organize and put outreach materials together

We are looking for volunteers with:

  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to learn and demonstrate a familiarity with HSI/Canada’s programs
  • Ability to understand Humane Society International/Canada policies and positions and able and willing to appropriately and accurately represent those policies when interacting with the public or otherwise representing HSI/Canada
  • Ability to learn and demonstrate a familiarity with HSI/Canada’s major campaigns and mission
  • Office experience helpful

We are asking a commitment for a minimum of three months, 1-2 hours per week.

Supporter Services Assistant

We’re looking for volunteers to help increase the Development Manager’s capacity (Fundraising Department) to meet his/her goals by providing research support.

Volunteers will assist by:

  • Researching how to attract Millennials as donors
  • Researching how to recruit/grow a legacy program
  • Researching crowdfunding strategies and other fundraising opportunities
  • Researching major donors and annual reports

We are looking for volunteers with:

  • Strong communication skills
  • Aptitude for learning and demonstrating a familiarity with HSI/Canada’s programs
  • Ability to understand HSI/Canada policies and positions while appropriately and accurately representing those policies when interacting with the public or otherwise representing the organization
  • Ability to learn and demonstrate a familiarity with HSI/Canada’s major campaigns and mission
  • Development and fundraising experience a plus.

We are asking for a commitment of a minimum of three months, 1-2 hours per week.
