HSI’s Latin America office has been working with the Costa Rica government to crack down on illegal dogfighting industry in that country. On October 10, 2012, HSI staff worked with local police and officials to rescue 28 dogs from a breeding facility.

HSI/Latin America works with Costa Rican law enforcement to investigate acts of animal cruelty, especially dogfighting cases. While dog and cockfighting is illegal in Costa Rica, it is widespread and often accompanied by the presence of illegal drugs, gambling and firearms.
