Students Have Designs on Ending Fur Trade
The Fur Free Alliance and Humane Society International are delighted to announce the winners of the annual European & International region of the Design Against Fur advertising poster competition — the student design competition with a conscience.
More than 7,000 students from around the world take part in the design competition every year. This year their artworks were judged by a panel of fashion, advertising and design experts who were tasked with choosing winning artworks that conveyed the message: "The wearing of fur is cruel and unnecessary."
"These compassionate students have used their design skills to great effect, delivering creative, compelling pieces of artwork that convey the message that fur is cruel, and in doing so they have shown a great understanding of the cruelties of the international fur trade, a trade that kills more than 75 million animals every year," said John Grandy, Ph.D., senior vice president for wildlife and habitat protection for The Humane Society of the United States.
The 2009 European & International region winners are:
1st Place: Yoon Kyung Eom - Pratt Institute, New York, U.S.
2nd Place: J. Links Salas - Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, U.S.
3rd Place: Xavier Bertels - Media & Design Academie, Genk, Belgium
3rd Place: Elizabeth Swain - James Madison University, Virginia, U.S.

The Design Against Fur competition continues grow every year, with students taking part from more than 60 countries around the world.
An annual competition, first held in 2003, it is open to all students in colleges around the world and is judged in four regions: China, Europe & International, Russia and UK & Ireland. The winners of each region are then considered for the overall Grand Prize – and are also judged by their peers and the public through an online vote which takes places in September at inFURmation.com.
The 2010 Design Against Fur competition will be launched in September 2009; details will be available on the Fur Free Alliance's website: inFURmation.com.
