Today at the emergency shelter, teams of veterinarians treated dogs while dozens of volunteers worked nonstop to provide desperately needed attention, care and affection.

The scale of this sheltering operation is amazing. But we are dedicated to ensuring that while these wonderful animals are in our care, they are comfortable, healthy and loved.

I brought one small white dog I named Courage into a quiet room with the HSI team during a meeting, to begin the slow process of socializing him to prepare him for life in a new home.

Help ensure we can be there for dogs whenever they need protection.

Slowly, he approached us, tentatively sniffing our hands, clearly overwhelmed as he experienced so many new things for the first time. I sat on the floor, watching him learn and explore. He turned to me, and tentatively climbed up onto my lap. As he felt, perhaps for the first time, loving arms holding him, he quietly drifted to sleep.

In that moment, I vowed to find him a family that will love him as much as I do. In a few short weeks, we hope to be ready to begin that process for each and every one of these deserving dogs.

These are the best moments of a rescue like this—when the animals begin to trust us.

Donate now to help these dogs and others like them.
