The State Government of Assam directed the Deupty Commissioners of all districts and the Commissioner of Guwahati to ensure that no animal fights, especially buffalo fights and bulbul fights, take place during the festival of Bihu. HSI/India welcomed the directive.

The Supreme Court of India maintained the status quo on Andhra Pradesh's cockfighting prohibition against a petition filed to lift the ban on the same. Humane Society International/India had intervened in the Supreme Court case to fight against the petition.

Humane Society International/India launched the national tip line this week in an effort to crack down on the criminal and inhumane activity. Anyone who has information about persons involved in illegal animal fighting—such as dogfighting, cockfighting and bullfighting—is urged to report their suspicions by calling +91 7674-922044.

India Confiscates Hundreds of Animals at Nepal Border as Illegal Transport Ban Takes Effect Ahead of Gadhimai Festival
HSI undertook a special mission to Nepal in collaboration with People for Animals and Animal Welfare Network Nepal where they met the President and the Prime Minister of Nepal, as well as Temple officials to call for a suspension of the sacrifice of half a million buffalo, goats and hens at this year's Gadhimai festival.

Jet Airways instituted a policy against the shipment of shark fins, joining a growing number of major international carriers committed to protecting declining shark populations and marine ecosystems. HSI/India, which along with animal welfare and conservation groups had petitioned Jet Airways to end its role in the international trade in shark fins, applauded the policy.

The Ministry of Home Affairs ordered all field formations of Sashastra Seema Bal to prevent cattle transport without license. The order comes a few weeks before the Gadhimai festival where more than 500,000 animals, most originating from India, could be sacrificed in Nepal.

HSI urged Indians to protect their pets from the lights and fireworks during the Diwali celebrations. Pets can be left trembling, shaking, barking more and injured by fireworks. Light, noise and color can be frightening and chaotic for animals.
