Restaurant company 100% Natural to source only cage-free eggs
Today, the restaurant chain 100% Natural announced that it will transition to a 100 percent cage-free egg supply chain in Mexico. 100% Natural will work together with Humane Society International to achieve this goal by 2020.
Sabina García, corporate policy and project manager for HSI Farm Animals in Mexico, stated: “We applaud socially responsible companies like 100% Natural for joining the global cage-free movement, by adopting a cage-free egg policy, and we invite other food companies to do the same. We look forward to working with 100% Natural and other companies to ensure the success of their cage-free policy. As more companies join this movement, we get closer to bringing an end to the use of cruel battery cages in egg production in Mexico.”
Robin Ledesma, director of operations at 100% Natural, stated: “At100% Natural we have always characterized ourselves as being leaders and innovators with a commitment to sustainability and responsible consumption, which includes animal welfare within our supply chain. Switching to cage-free eggs is a very important step and a priority for us. We’ll continue working with Humane Society International on other issues to create a more responsible supply chain.”
Over the past few months, Latin America, especially Mexico, has seen a wave of cage-free egg commitments. HSI has worked with food industry leaders in the region and around the globe on their recent commitment to endorse these more humane policies. These companies include Sodexo and Compass Group, the largest food service providers in the world, Alsea, the largest restaurant operator in Latin America, and Burger King, Arcos Dorados, Grupo Bimbo, Grupo Toks and CMR.
Cage-free policies aim to offer a higher level of welfare for egg-laying hens. Currently, the majority of egg-laying hens are confined in wire battery cages where each bird has approximately the space of an iPad to spend her whole life.
